Lani Faulkner – Age 50         70.3 Ironman Augusta  2011

My name is Lani Faulkner and 2011 was a BIG year for me. 2011 marked my 50th year. I am super blessed with good health and decided to mark this year with some achievements I thought I’d never obtain much less even dream about.

I have been coached by Pam since middle of 2010. I love her coaching style. She paid attention to all the details about me. My family and work life are very important. Throughout my training I’ve reached milestones that “just happened”. I was committed to my plans that Pam laid out for me. Now, as I reflect back on my 50th birthday year, I can tell my future grandchildren….it’s NEVER too late….with experience and pride.

I thank Pam from the bottom of my heart. In 2011, I became a half IRONMAN and a multiple Century Rider and a multiple Marathoner!!! In 2012, I plan to focus on my new grandson who will be arriving soon, my workouts and becoming a full IRONMAN in 2013. With Pam, I know I’ll get there!

Kim Keheo – runner…. age…. 40 something  :-)

I may ask for your professional training advice again in the near future. It was great to work with you, having you “in my head” gently pushing and encouraging me to perform outside of my comfort zone. Your even disposition, positive encouragement and compliments are icing on the cake! You are a great coach and just a pleasure to work with and your knowledge of fitness and nutrition are unequaled. Oh, did I forget that you are not just a great coach, but also an incredible athlete who sets quitean example for her followers?

Amazing!

Thanks again for all you do

.

Sara Struthers – Montreal Canada

I will send you a picture of me during my first marathon and send you a little recap on that race. I can tell you that there is no way I would have even considered doing a marathon without having you as a coach.

Sara Fuhrman – on new nutrition strategies… :-)

And a BIG CONGRATULATIONS for completing the Goofy Challenge 1.5 and 1.6.2012

By the end of 2010, I had lost my favorite running buddy to faster times and had been beaten several times by another woman in my age group and an 81 year old woman. I met with Pam in January, 2011 and told her my two goals: I wanted to beat those two in a 5K and oh, by the way, I wanted to qualify for Boston. I needed a 4:45 and my best time since 2000 was 5:25 and did I mention that I was 66 and I’d had the Boston dream for 25 years. To which she replied, “No problem. You’ll be beating those ladies in no time and we can get you to Boston, too.” I committed to working with her then.

By March, I was beating those ladies and in Oct and again in December, I qualified for Boston, even though the time to qualify dropped to 4:40.

For me, working with Pam as my trainer is the key for a lot of reasons. I have a program tailored specifically to me. I record all workouts and races on my Garmin and upload them for Pam. That makes me accountable – I have to show up and do the work. The Garmin eliminates the fudge factor very effectively. Plus, I am competitive enough to want to meet or beat every workout goal – and the Garmin gives me the info to do that. Last, Pam is able to see from my Garmin results and my feedback where we need to tweak my training.

Most important, Pam believes in me. When she expressed such calm confidence in my abilities at our first meeting, she made me want to prove her right. It was a very long time before I believed Boston was a possibility, but I decided early on to do the work and let Pam do the believing. I believe in her. Make no mistake – it is not easy. I work hard to follow the monthly training plans that Pam lays out. But, she works equally hard for me. She is always there when I have questions, doubts, victories… with an innate sense of when to push and when to encourage, using just the right words to accomplish both. Plus, she provides valuable advice/feedback on nutrition, race fueling and recovery, and injury treatment. She doesn’t just go the extra mile – she is beside you all the way!

If you have a goal that you are committed to and you are willing to do the work to achieve it, I heartily recommend Pam as the person to lay out the path for you and team with you to achieve it.

Age 66

Ron George – New Symrna Beach Florida – Marine… aka Rocky
As you can see from the picture and finish time of 38 minutes, I was in pretty good shape but I couldn’t break 30 minutes in a 5k, 60 minutes in a 10k or finish a marathon. I had two terrible marathon finishes after using two different training programs even though I had done all the training I was told to do. The first one I finished close to 7 hours and had to walk the last 5 miles. The second one I quit at the half way mark.
Since working with Pam, in less than a year, I regularly break 30 minutes in the 5k, 60 minutes in the 10k and have finished 3 marathons each one faster than the others at very close to 5 hours. This last year I was running my speed work in the 8 minutes. My tempo runs in the 9′s and 8′s and lots of 10′s in the long run. I knew I would break way into the 4 hour marathon in the fall of 2011, but in September while in the mountains I broke my ankle.
Was I disappointed? You bet I was but Pam’s coaching didn’t stop. She has worked very close with me and I am back training again. She knows when to kick you, love you or just listen to you. We do a lot of things at first that might seem different but I can honestly say on a scale of 1 to 10 she is a 10. She has helped me with my nutrition and recovery as well as strength training and that last stubborn 10 lbs was gone as well. I can’t wait to see what the future holds but I know for sure I will run much faster. I’m stronger, I eat better and over all I am much healthier.
I honestly believe most of this would not be possible without Pam. Being a 67 year old man, people say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks but I say the right coach can send you in the right direction. Your part is to listen and believe in yourself.

The only obstacles are the ones you create in between your ears

Happy running Boston bound. I love you Pam.

New Years Resolutions

Each year the number one New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight, become more fit or somehow attend to the myriad of health problems plaguing over 66% of the population of our country. In the health and wellness industry there is a predictable statistical influx of new clients who are at a readiness stage in January, like no other time in the calendar year. Yet we continue as a nation to get less and less healthy with each passing New Year – why is that?

Establishing a Healthy Lifestyle is a journey; it begins the moment we decide to take a step on the new path with a different mind than the mind that chose the current path. It begins with a thought, a mind-set change and any one action moving in that direction. And it ends on the day that we take our final breath in this tangible world. Any soul in search of the fast track needs to be aware that all fast tracks lead to big drop offs, to unsustainable results and to ultimately unhealthier final outcomes. The path to healthy happy lives is ours to choose at any given moment of the day – we just have to choose it. We don’t have to announce it, facebook it, twitter it, text it…. we just have to choose it.

Nutritionally speaking, the solution to a healthy path has not changed for hundreds or even thousands of years. The foods that most resemble their earth-given qualities should be most abundant in our daily choices. This means we regularly choose lots and lots of vegetables and fruits. At least 45- 50% of our daily calories should come from these foods. For those of us who love to eat, this is great news. Vegetables especially are so low in calories, we can eat great quantities, get tremendous benefits from the impact of vitamins, minerals, fiber and water, and still be well within our daily fueling budget. Although most of us LIKE vegetables and fruits, we struggle to eat all that we need on a daily basis. The National Cancer Institute recommends that each of us have 6 – 11 servings of veggies and fruits PER DAY. Many people drink that many sodas or cups of coffee but rarely get the recommended dose of nature’s most perfect fueling creations.

Habitually speaking, it is most favorable to the human body to divide our caloric intake between 6 or even 7 meals and snacks throughout the day, eating small quantities of nutrient rich food. To manage hunger, it is most helpful to eat a lean protein source, a veggie or a fruit and a either a complex carbohydrate (a starch) or a very small portion of healthy fat (salmon (protein and healthy fat – excellent!) vegetable oil, nuts, seeds, olives, avacado….etc) all at the same time. The human body has a highly specialized intestinal tract which allows nutrients to be absorbed at different depots; it is NOT necessary for digestion that we combine our foods together HOWEVER for satiety and a steady flow of energy, it is most helpful to do so. Therefore, most nutrition educators, Nutritionists and Registered Dieticians will recommend this strategy for their clients or patients.

Finally may I suggest you consider the following as we slide the year 2010 into our memoirs and into our personal histories – there is NO NEED to wait until any particular date, to begin a new path on the one and only journey of your life. Consider this most impactful, profound statement and find a place for this wisdom in your personal philosophy – “Life is what happens when we are making other plans”

The past is now history – if it is good, bring forth the memories from time to time. If it is not, find the lessons in the struggles, stop digging in the holes you have fallen into, climb out and take a different route…. one without those same holes along the way. It is simply a choice. The future is promised to no one. All we have are our present moments. Find the miracle in every present moment of your life; if you choose to do that, you CANNOT and WILL NOT mistreat your body by feeding it unhealthy choices or being stationary when you have a choice to fuel and move. Your journey begins right now – for no apparent reason, with the reward being a moment by moment better quality of life, please choose to be a healthier you. ….. today, this second and all the seconds of your present moments. In doing so you will unlock the doors to all that has held you captive on your journey thus far. Use a different mind and eliminate the need for resolutions on a yearly basis. It all begins with a single step.

Happy 2011!!!
